I keep failing for a month now (except for a fleeting few days) to connect Outlook 2016 via IMAP to Gmail. I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 2 two months ago. I had Office 2007. POP email kept working fine. However, a month ago, the perplexing “enter your username and password” credentials popup started to be stuck with my Outlook POP. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Complete Advanced info: Incoming server - Enter 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP3). Use the following type of encrypted connection - Choose SSL. Same thing happened to me, and about the same timing. I've created app-specific passwords at least 4 times so far, trying to get it all back up and running. I did find that they work on the SMTP server if I try to send an email, but the IMAP connection to the incoming server hasn't connected for hours, now. A gmail issue, perhaps?
If the automatic setup of your email account does not work in Microsoft Outlook 2016, you can set up your account manually.
Step-by-Step Instructions
If you want to retrieve your email using POP3, select Account type POP3 in the Server information. Enter pop.ionos.com as your incoming mail server. The other account settings are the same as for IMAP.
SSL Settings for POP: Now switch to the Advanced tab. Check the box Server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). Then input the incoming and outgoing mail server settings.
You have completed the setup of your email account in Microsoft Outlook.
